Panels are a great way of creating content depth in SharpCloud, allowing users to discover more about the data within the story. Panels are the building blocks of the data items, meaning if a user opens an item, they will be shown the panels that the items contain.

Panels can be used to display structured and unstructured data. For example, a panel can display the item’s data-driven attributes, but also can display videos and additional resources such as documents and weblinks. There is no limit on the number of panels an item can have.

By default, stories will start with 4 global panels – a title panel (an attribute panel set to display the item image and description), a relationships panel, a tags panel and a resources panel. “Global” panels are set at the story setup level and automatically added to all items in the story unless the user opts to not include one or more global panel in items belonging to certain categories.

Panel Types

There are several panel types, each of which can be used to provide a different type of content and insight into an item. They are as follows:

Text Panel – Can be used to store rich text content such as a description or notes about the item. There is the ability to use some item-driven content by using square brackets to make the content on the panel unique to each item. For example, using [name] will insert the name of the specific item each text panel is associated with.

Image Panel – Can be used to host images for users to view and download.

Video Panel – This panel type can support YouTube videos or MP4 files to be directly uploaded and played via the panel. For other video providers, a HTML panel may be the best option.

Attribute Panel – An attribute panel will display attribute values of the user’s choosing. For example, showing the “Cost” associated attributes on a specific panel and then “Delivery” metrics on another.

Resources Panel – A panel which allows the uploading of files to be made available for download or clickable web URLs that are associated with that item.

HTML Panel – HTML Panels can be used for a variety of tasks, embedding online documents, videos or even other SharpCloud views/stories. Using the HTML panel and embedding a document hosted on SharePoint for example, means that when users view the panel, they will see the most up-to-date version of the document.

Relationship Panel – A useful panel to display all/specific items that are related to the primary item with any relationship comments displayed to provide insight into the relationships of the item.

Note: The ability to add new relationship panels and also filter the content on the panel is available for users who are using SharpCloud v9.1.0116 and onwards.

Tags Panel – Can be used to display what tags the item possess. Can be defined to display all tags (default) or to show specific tag groups.

Note: The ability to add new tag panels and also filter the content on the panel is available for users who are using SharpCloud v9.1.0116 and onwards.

Panels have further functionality in an Enterprise Solution, which will be covered in the Using Panels in an Enterprise Solution article.
